Michael Altaffer Named Chair-Elect for Stardust Non-Profit Building Supplies

Stardust Non-Profit Building Supplies provides quality reclaimed materials for reuse. Stardust celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2017 and sees a future without waste: a sustainable community where resources are reused or redistributed. During its 20 year history, Stardust has diverted 80 million pounds of usable materials from local landfills, served 1 million customers with reclaimed building supplies, and distributed $21 million worth of household items through its Gifts in Kind program to local nonprofit agencies to support their clients and operations. In doing so, Stardust has set a benchmark for the benefits of reuse that has been recognized on local and national levels while helping the Valley of the Sun realize its waste diversion goals.

Stardust envisions a community where people are actively engaged in the reuse movement and as a result create a cleaner environment and a greener economy. The first step in Stardust’s reuse model is deconstruction, an environmentally sound alternative to conventional demolition. It is the process of carefully and systematically disassembling and removing previously constructed items with the intent to reuse them elsewhere. Stardust’s deconstruction service ensures usable materials are cycled back into the community. It reduces the amount of construction and demolition waste entering the landfills while providing a sustainable alternative to conventional demolition. Stardust offers this unique service to homeowners and businesses at no cost in order to divert more usable materials from landfills.

Michael Altaffer has served on the voluntary Board of Directors of Stardust for two years. The Board of Directors has been integral to Stardust’s evolution and growth over the past 20 years. The Board has moved from an operating board, as is common in the start-up phase of nonprofit organizations, to the strategic board that it is today. Michael will assume the position of Chair of the Board of Directors in 2018.
